Seven weeks of chemotherapy and daily radiation have left the 66-year old weaker, but his spirit is not dented one bit;
?I?m happy to be feeling the way I do today,? he tells THR. ?As opposed to how I felt a week ago.?
The appearance on Letterman soon after the cancer was known was a trial, he admits. But it was one happy spot in a very tough year; His eldest son Cameron was imprisoned in April, then came the cancer, then his ex-wife, Diandra Luker sued for 50% of his ?Wall Street II? income ? to add to the $45-million she got in their 2000 divorce.
The case was dismissed.
?I try not to dwell too much on a bad marriage,? Douglas says calmly. ?I just wish I got out a little earlier.?
Meanwhile, he and current wife Catherine Zeta Jones celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary on November 18, and she?s his biggest fan;
?He?s an extremely strong person, and I love that strength of character, coupled with the reality that he?s sensitive ? he doesn?t take himself too seriously,? she says. ?But he?s a very strong man. This has really helped. He never lost that strength.?
And Michael is clearly fond of her in return; ?I fell in love unexpectedly and got married and had a family, which I never anticipated at my age,? he says. ?And loved it.?
His doctors recently told him he has an 80-percent chance of full recovery, so he?s now planning the ?third act? of his career. First comes a role in which few might foresee him ? He?s due to play Liberace, and starts shooting with Steven Soderbergh next May or June;
?I?m a blank slate,? Douglas admits. ?Everything shows me he was a lovely man; I just want to reconfirm that.?
But the cancer still looms large in his life, so how does he feel now it seems he?s beaten the curse that many thought would beat him?
?I haven?t really digested it yet, truth be told,? he admits. ?I didn?t think of this as life and death; I just saw it as an illness to get over.? He then cracks a smile, ?It certainly has put a little perspective on mortality.?
It also clearly gave him some perspective on how his fans feel;
?I?ve been overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support,? he says, choking up briefly. ?Cancer has shown me what family is. It showed me a love that I never knew really existed.?
