Jim sprang to worldwide attention with ?Passion? in 2004. But despite grossing over $370-million in the US alone he has barely worked since. He told the audience he felt ?rejected in my own industry,? and it showed.
The actor was in town to urge fellow church-goers at the First Baptist in Orlando to share his depth of faith, and to promote an all-star version of the Bible which he?s produced. But he also spoke about ?Passion?s director, Mel Gibson.
?Mel Gibson, he?s a horrible sinner, isn?t he?? Jim asked the congregation rhetorically. ?Mel doesn?t need your judgment, he needs your prayers.?
Jim also remembered the casting process for ?Passion,? where Mel gave him the job then later begged him not to take it.
?He said, ?You?ll never work in this town again!?? Jim recalled. ?I told him, ?We all have to embrace our crosses.? But Jesus is as controversial now as he?s ever been. Not much has changed in 2,000 years.?
He and Mel even joked about his initials ? J.C ? during the casting. But Jim told the crowd he doesn?t mind the lack of jobs the film?s caused ? he knows he?ll get his reward later in heaven.
?We have to give up our names, our reputations, our lives to speak the truth,? he explained.
A devout Roman Catholic, the 42-year old actor also has challenges away from the screen; In 2007 he and his wife, Keri Brown adopted a baby from China who has been diagnosed with brain cancer. They have now adopted a second child from the area ? and she has the same thing.
?Maybe God, through my son?s death, is going to teach me something,? he mused to the crowd.
