[HMG Celebrity News] ? With Elizabeth Taylor now at rest in Forest Lawn, saved from the repulsive plot we outlined yesterday, those who met her are keen to remember. Among them is Kevin Sessums, whose 1997 interview with Liz gave him hours of memories.
?I love trusting. I get hurt very easily,? Elizabeth told him. ?I?m tough when I have to be, but I can spin on a dime. I?ve led a very strange life.?
Kevin then asked if that life had been mostly in film?;
?Honey, you can see through celluloid and it?s brittle,? Liz counseled. ?Neither of those things would describe me.?
The two spoke at Elizabeth?s luxurious home in Bel Air. The result was a cover story for POZ Magazine, one of the leading voices for those living with AIDS, locating a cure for which was Elizabeth?s ongoing passion.
At the time she was still recovering from surgery to remove a brain tumor. This left her hair short and blindingly white, but her raucous laugh was still there. The topic roamed from tales of old Hollywood to the revulsion she felt about vivisection. But one subject which touched a nerve concerned British politics.
Kevin told her the leader of the UK?s Conservative Party [their equivalent of the GOP] had just declared his party?s support for gay marriage, and Liz was impressed;
?My God! That?s a step forward,? she enthused. ?But it doesn?t surprise me; When the English make a move, it?s usually a good one. But everybody thinks everybody who comes from England is gay anyway,? she said, laughing again.
Kevin asked if that included her, as she was born there? Especially with such short hair;
?It?s my butch-do,? she replied. ?My new lesbian look.?
Kevin then asked if part of her success in raising money for AIDS was being able to stop playing ?Elizabeth Taylor??
?God!? she replied, shocked by the concept; ?I would find being ?Elizabeth Taylor? really boring.?
Having made more than sixty films Elizabeth came into contact with some of the greatest names in the business ? James Dean, Rock Hudson and Marlon Brando to name a few. She worked with James on his last film, ?Giant? in 1955, but one memory of that time was to sad to reveal;
?I loved Jimmy. I?m going to tell you something, but it?s off the record until I die, okay?? she confided. ?When Jimmy was 11 he was molested by his Minister. I think that haunted him. I know it did. During ?Giant? we?d stay up nights and talk, and that was one of the things he confessed to me.?
But despite all the movies and the memories they gave her Elizabeth never wrote a memoir. Why was that, she was asked?
?I would have to give up today,? she explained. ?And dive into yesterday. You can?t predict tomorrow. And my life?s had so many startling tomorrows I don?t think they?ve stopped.?
Sadly, this week they did.
If you loved her films or supported her fight against AIDS, let?s hear your memories of Liz?
