Woody Allen has backed a petition calling for United Nation (U.N.) officials to publicly condemn the Syrian government's crackdown on opposition protests.
The country's government is being tough on pro-democracy locals, who are against the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.
Thousands of citizens are said to have fled to neighbouring Turkey, but U.S. President Barack Obama stepped in last month (May11) to impose sanctions on the ruler, as well as six other senior Syrian officials.
tragic and morally unacceptable" for the Security Council not to take action
Allen has now added his voice to the campaign, calling for the U.N. Security Council to take action against the Syrian government's treatment of protesters, according to the Afp.
The director has lent his support to an online petition, which states that demonstrators in Syria have "faced a death machine aware of the heavy price they would pay."
The signatories, also including writer Salman Rushdie, say it would be "tragic and morally unacceptable" for the Security Council not to take action.
