[HMG Celebrity News] ? Since the arrival of home-video in the mid-70?s movie audiences have been in decline, and a new plan by Warner Bros to rent movies via Facebook could finally make theaters extinct.
The studio has just confirmed plans to begin renting films to Facebook?s 600+ million members. First on the menu is their 2008 double-Oscar winner ?Batman: The Dark Knight.? Fans can rent it on the film?s Facebook page for just 30 credits or $3.
?Facebook has become a daily destination for millions of people,? Thomas Gewecke, president of Warner?s ?Digital Distribution.? tells THR. ?Making our films available there is a natural extension of our digital efforts. It gives consumers a convenient way to enjoy our films through the world?s largest social network.?
Once rented, you have 48-hours to enjoy the experience. You can also pause and resume viewing at any point during that time, and you?ll still have access to all of FB?s usual functions ? post comments, chat with friends and, of course update your status.
Warners? statement makes it clear the release of ?Dark Knight? is a test to ensure there?s demand for the offer, but they already plan to offer other movies for rental through Facebook and perhaps other sites.
Once the other studios copy this scheme ? and they will ? the neighborhood video store will be doomed. But what do you think of Warner?s offer ? Will you rent movies this way, and why??
